We had the most AMAZING DAY in Nara with our guide Ami-san, who runs her own tour company, GoAmiGo. Nara is a magical place, brimming with history and the “old ways” of Japan. Seamlessly interweaving facts, tales, and legends, Ami-San made Nara come alive as she led us through Todaiji Temple, Kasuga-Taisha Shrine, Nara Park with its friendly deer, the vibrant Naramachi district, and lunch at a traditional-style establishment.
She knows a lot, not only about the main spots you’ll want to see, but also about cool tucked-away places. Whatever she doesn’t know, she’ll happily find out for you straightaway. She has her finger on your pulse the whole tour, adjusting to your interests and gauging the type and extent of information you wish. She kept volunteering extras: not just snapping photos, but also making videos; taking us to a high quality (but very reasonable) tee-shirt shop to find non-touristy gifts for our family; accommodating our dietary needs. Plus, she can pivot on a dime: something’s unexpectedly closed; she’s got immediate alternatives.
Ami-san embodies the best we’ve found in Japan: she’s curious and charming; eager to learn and share; super smart, earnest, diligent, efficient; polite, gracious, humble, kind, honest, and honorable. Most importantly, she loves spending time with people and guiding them through her land; she also sees wonder in the world around her. Half way through the day, she felt like family. We will not forget her. And, thank you so much, Ami-san, for the wonderful video collage as a momento of our day together! Mark and Suzan, Miami
